Mid MO | You are completely valid in your need to understand how and why your business functions the way it does and if you are moving in a positive direction. Knowing our numbers makes me feel secure and like I understand the direction our lives are heading.
I am a spreadsheet nerd. I like doing books and all that. I am also the farmer. My husband could give a flying fart about budgets. Regardless, he is on all my farm accounts and he knows what's going on. Im on all his accounts and I know what's up.We regularly talk about how much town money is coming in or going out. Same with farm money. With 2 off farm jobs, a kid, and a farm,communication is critical.
If you enjoy doing the books then you might be a great help to him. A spreadsheet is just a snap shot in time. Inventory and cash flow plays a huge part in making that picture whole. He might feel a little weird about having you do the books, it's sort of like digging through somebody's underwear drawer. But I'm guessing you probably wash his drawers, so it's not that far a leap to do the books! And when times are lean (& there will be lean times) it will help you understand what he is going through. When times are good, you can celebrate together. If he's the nerd, you still need to be in the loop!!! It's critical!
I've been married 24 years and the truth is, you are the key to his success (& he is your key as well.) Even if you never open a gate or plant a kernel, having a real partner to do life with is what will make you two successful. You seem very knowledgeable, interested, and bright. Your post reads such that your attitude is right. Your questions are valid.
