coast of Maine
Just a long power outage from an ice storm can ruin most leave the heat on plans. My lake house has a heat pump thats there to just keep it a tad ambient.I have added a propane non electric vented heater that looks just like a wood stove. It has a remote millivolt thermostat.I set that at 45 degrees. When or if the power fails for days it will keep the place above freezing.I do shut off the water pump.Last winter we were so mild the little heat pump kept the place above 50 all winter.Im not sure at 20 below that it will ,,then the propane heater will start,,hopefully.I could have added a gen set but the cost was beyond my means.Even in the south when you leave for the north you should fill your p traps as any dehumidify will drain them quickly, same with toilet bowls. You can use cellophane over toilet bowls to keep them full.
