West of Mpls MN about 50 miles on Hwy 12 | Keep the heat set to at least 50*F and have someone check on the house/furnace periodically.
My dad would set the thermostat at 40*f and he and mom would leave for several months without a worry in the world...I would go turn the thermostat back up the day after they left to 60*F because when the temp got down -0*F or less for a few days in a row a couple pipes would freeze and burst if I didn't. I learned that the hard way the first year they started wintering in Texas.
I never did tell dad about the pipes that froze and burst, me fixing the pipes, and me turning up the heat after they would leave. I just let him keep believing that he was saving big money on heat because he had the heat turned down during the winter months for three decades. |
