Ford didnt have anything that GM didnt have drivetrain wise. Both had Dana front axles and GM had 14 bolt rears which were superior to the Dana 60s in the Fords. Same transfer cases. Turbo 400 and C6 both tough transmissions.
My experience was, the Turbo 400 was a tad better than the turbo 350. That said, the turbo 350 was a pile of junk for pulling or working. Hell, there were plenty of them around here, that just went out while shifting. Never had much issues with a C6. From a drag racing mustang, to mud trucks, to ‘79 F350 pulling gravity wagons. We had a few chevys over the years and never had reliability issues from engines, but the rest of the truck, didn’t hold up. I’m talking about 70’s- early 90’s. The toughest truck we ever had may have been a ‘76 IH 200, 4 wheel drive and 392 engine. The IH may have been the best riding, driving, manual shifting truck, for its vintage, we ever had.
