Per BTU, there is still nothing cheaper than coal, period.


You don't have to believe me, there's tons of info out there on Google to verify that.     Govt regulation and wind/solar subsidies are what is closing coal plants, not the cost of coal.      

Coal generation doesn't work well with the unreliable wind/solar generation that is being pushed onto the market by subsidies.   The ability of natural gas plants to go from idle to 100% output relatively quickly is why natural gas plants are the preferred power source to provide backup generation to unreliable wind and solar generation.
