West of Mpls MN about 50 miles on Hwy 12 | The 6.9 ran until 1987. In 1988 The naturally aspirated 7.3 non turbo IDI came out. I believe it was 1993 the 7.3 IDI turbo was introduced. The 7.3 Power Stroke was introduced in 1994 . When the naturally aspirated 7.3s were introduced a 7.3 glow plug upgrade kit for the 6.9s became available that solved any glow plug/starting issues.
I've had several 6.9s over the years, the "sprayer pickup" had an automatic tranny with higher geared rear-ends...Pull the tranny into L, the transfer case lever into 4-L, put the go pedal right on the floor and let the engine governor control speed at a perfect 10 MPH all day long up and down hill. windows rolled up, AC on, absolutely no issues with over engine heating.
Our fertilizer guy was/is a die hard Chevy person and was using gas powered Chevies to spray at the time. He removed the hoods, never ran the AC in the field, and still had never ending issues keeping the engines cool...it would really chap his azz when I would pull into his fertilizer plant to grab a couple jugs of chemical with the well loved Ford loaded with water and there was condensation on the outside of the windshield because I had the AC lever set at -11.
