I’ve come to the conclusion conception rates have more to do with the bulls than the cows. We have a similar herd to yours…straight angus for years…the pastures with the good breeding bulls get almost all or all the cows bred, the other pastures tend to struggle. Generations of AI have unintentionally bred the libido out of bulls…maybe 1 in 4 bulls is a really good breeder anymore


I can see that as a problem if you are running small groups with only a bull or two. We run 17 bulls in our mature herd where these three year olds are summered. I’ve noticed that our 4 year old bulls aren’t usually that active. We always roll them after 3 seasons for that reason.


I know that’s the way everyone does it with large cow groups and wide open acres. But, I always wonder “which one” is actually breeding, “which one” is always fighting, and “which one” is camped out under a shade tree by the waterhole watching butterflies like Ferdinand in our son’s book.
