Used a 3 joule on a .4 acre pasture for katahdins, only 4 strands of electric, no other fence. I don't think I had many if any escapes, maybe an occasional lamb. I also have a 1.6 acre farrowing pasture for hogs, with 2 strands, divided into 3 paddocks. 3 joules works well (you can hear the crack when they contact it), but if a higher joule fencer would work better with an increased weed load, I wouldn't mind having a 6 joule for my setup. Highly recommend getting one such as the Gallagher that has the built-in voltmeter, saves you the trouble of checking for sufficient voltage. IIRC, the "fence OK" light on some chargers only means 2,500 volts. It's nice to have 6k or more.
