Collets become addictive when you make small parts. Easy on the threads and secure. But I have used your method before I had the collets to work with and it works just fine too. No wood was harmed in the modification of these screws. The leftover section of aluminum I used has a dirty decal on it that might look a little bit like wood. I'd love a collet chuck. When working with standard diameter stock they are lightning fast and as you said, really help with radial runout. This lathe is a Jet from the 1970s and the spindle threads are one of a kind, they do not match with common spindle threads. Putting a collet chuck on would require machining a custom faceplate to mount the chuck. A project that I have not yet found time or motivation for yet.
