We run spreaders on our combines and prefer them over choppers for several reasons. I am currently looking at a used Deere S series with a chopper and advanced powercast tailboard. Would it be possible to take out the chopper and just run the tailboard? I have no familiarity with them at all.

We are corn and soybeans.

I can't imagine how a spreader is better than a chopper in beans. There must be something the majority of us don't know.

I thought the same thing, with a chopper the bean residue is spread over 20-30 feet. Without, it's just in globs right behind the machine. We had a custom guy years ago that didn't have a chopper, you could see the streaks in corn the next year.

To the OP, I don't see how a chopper is that complicated, considering an entire combine is a very complicated machine to begin with.
