Wisconsin | If you dig into 40f dirt in the winter it will steam. Steaming just means the silage is warmer than the air, and it will be warmer in the core than the air when the air is cold. If it's making heat, it's getting way too much oxygen, the oxygen should only reach the rotten parts on the edge, and very slowly reach further, but it rots as it goes.
Drier silage will be harder to pack and easier for air to flow through, wetter silage will risk liquid loss. | |
