CNY
I grew up working with my Dad, Grandfather and Uncle every day. I had a wonderful relationship with my Grandfather and Uncle. My Dad and I are too much alike. Stubborn, cheap, bull headed and always right.
I worked at home with him for one year after college then moved 1000 miles away. It was one of the hardest things I ever did and he certainly wasn’t excited about it. That being said, after about 6 months our relationship was better than it had ever been. I worked on several different farms in different areas for the next 12 years and we stayed on good terms. In 2019 out of the blue he told me he was retiring and gave me a chance to work his land. My wife & I bought the homestead and rent all his land now. It’s 100% a cash lease he doesn’t tell me what to do but does offer his advice when I ask.
I respect my Dad a lot, he ran and grew a successful farm for 44 years. Now that I’m farming on my own I see many of his decisions as wise, things I didn’t think when I was younger. I’m also glad I was able to work on some other farms and screw up there and learn a lot.
