Subject: RE: Electric Hybrid (Heat Pump) Water Heaters

I have 80 gal Rheem hybrid. Installed 2 years ago. Word of advice on ducting. It is installed in my basement. I pull air into the unit from a duct just directly above the unit from a main floor bathroom. In the summer, I exhaust the air back into my kitchen living room area. These things are like a small air conditioner. It extracts the heat and releases cold air. If you let it flow directly into the basement, you will have a cold basement unless you have a large basement.
In the winter I flip a couple of deflectors in the exhaust ducts. Now direct the cold air into the crawl space and away from the main floor. In the warm months, flip it back to the kitchen/main floor.
I can pull intake air from either the main floor or from the basement. In my case I leave drawing the air from the main level. The warmer the intake air, the more efficient. I have read the best placement for houses in warm/hot climates is in the garage. Intake hot air and exhaust cool air into the garage.
If you have water heated floors in your house, those boiler rooms get very warm. Probably best to draw the air in from the boiler room.

I have had as many as 15 people staying in the house and not run out of hot water. When I check it on the app, it seems to be running off of the heat pump. The electric coils are just for high demand. They come with a 10 warranty. They claim to be more cheaper to run than natural gas. They claim payback in about 5 years when compared to the initial higher cost. I had originally planned to have 2 gas 40 gallon heaters but the exhaust piping was creating issues getting to the outside. One of my favorite features is it is wifi controlled. I turn it on/off if I am not going to be there for weeks. Turn it on several hours before returning.
