NE Indiana | If you were just doing a starter test with 28-0-0 then it's pretty easy to leave strips and then up the rate during sidedress to make up the difference. It will take some more work to get good data with 10-34-0 as you really need to replace that phosphorus with dry spread in the strips that don't get starter. I have been involved in quite a few starter tests and have never seen a clear winner to starter other than moisture difference at harvest(almost always 2% drier than the strips without starter). We run straight 28-0-0 as starter but mainly just do that to spread out our nitrogen applications and gets us in the field sooner at harvest. 150 lbs ams dry spread pre, then 10 gal/ac 28-0-0 with some biologicals and zinc with the starter. Then sidedress the remaining nitrogen we need.
It really is amazing to see how ugly the non-starter corn looks for the first 6-8 weeks of its life compared to corn with starter and then see no yield difference at harvest.
