You're asking for a plant that can put massive energy into it's root with only 30-45 days of fall growth before cool weather and sun light slow it down, and also winterkills...

Brassicas are going to grow the best at cooler temps. Early Sept or better yet a mid Aug planting date could get you something more noticeable. There's more than just the "one big root" tillage radish to choose from. Rapeseed would be on that list too.

A winer annual like camlina would work too, but you'd have to kill it off in the spring.


I have heard that the "best" broadleaf for compaction is safflower, but that's a summer plant. Something for after wheat.
