What causes tiny cobs on my corn plants? How can I eliminate them?

From what I could tell it looks like a second ear, not a sucker. The plant was very happy then decided it couldn't support the second to full maturity. More population would cause it not to try the second ear. Most want one to two inches 4cm tip back on the main ear meaning you didn't leave potential out due to not enough population. Just what I could tell from video. I had very good year here and some plants had 2 full ears on them. Many aborted the second ear late in season due to it being dry. May have needed more nitrogen or something else. Hard to tell but should be shooting for 7-9 bushels per thousand plants. being north like you I would shoot closer to the 7.
