Subject: Treating cow hoof problems

SE Wisconsin
With the really wet spring and summer we had, we had a few cows get hoof problems. Mostly abscesses.

I had the vet come out multiple times. When it was dry we cut the hoof open to get rid of the infection and gave it an antibiotic... When it was more wet out, we cleaned out the hoof and blocked them. Then gave an antibiotic.

When I talk to others or watch online videos it seems like most guys just administer antibiotics and keep an eye on em.

Is trimming the hoof to get the infection out worth it? I just think with an open hoof like that she is bound to walk through manure and get reinfected.

What is your method of choice for hoof issues? Good rot vs hoof abscess dealt different?

Thanks
Tim
