W Texas | I’m not an impeller guy. They are reputed to scrape the waxy coat off of grass, which sounds fishy to me.
If hay is put up right, doesn’t matter how it was conditioned. The impeller knocks leaves off of alfalfa and breaks the stem in a few places, and moisture has to travel to that break in order to escape. So that takes much longer than with a crimper, which crushes the stem along its length and doesn’t knock off many leaves.
For alfalfa, steel on steel rollers are the best. Not an expert on grass and will let others chime in on that. | |
