East of Broken Bow | My tips depend on the service, although I always leave something. And by service if the place is swamped and the waitress is having trouble keeping up, but is trying, I consider that different than if there are only 2 tables of people, and you have to ask for more water after your glass has been empty for 5 minutes.
We went out for my daughter's birthday last weekend, we ordered meals with water. I know that a sign of a bad tipper is when the whole table just drinks water, so I wondered how the waiter was going to act, but he took very good care of us, did his job well, and was very cheerful. He got a $10 tip for a table of 4.
Contrast that to another time when the 4 of us went to a buffet place. All the waitress had to do was refill our water, which she didn't do. They weren't terribly busy, she just sat at an empty table talking with someone most of the time. I got thirsty enough I went to the counter with my glass and asked for more water. Bill was a bit under $60, all I had in my wallet were 2 $50s and a $100 bill. So when the bill arrived, I gave her the $100 for the check. I got a $10 back in change. She gave herself a bit over $28 for her tip, out of the money, without asking (or earning) it. I'm still kind of irked about that. My wife even said she wasn't surprised, she was acquainted with the waitress and got the vibe she was the kind of person who 'deserves' things instead of 'earns' them. | |
