I realize bullet placement is crucial in any situation for taking deer. If you don’t hit it correctly it’s not going down. I have a small farm with deer traveling through between large tracts of timber. 200 yards is my general distance from bale blind to target areas. I have an old Remington .223 for my gun. Is this going to be large enough gun? Season opens this weekend. Do I need to find a larger caliber gun and practice up over the next couple days?

I do a bit of varmint shooting so I know my 223 and 22-250 like the back of my hand. If I had to use my 223 to harvest a deer, I wouldn't hesitate for a second but I would only take a head shot out to 250 yards max. Most will say this is reckless but varminters know their rifles better than anyone. Wind, distance, and elevation are all just second nature.

That being said, I like to be over gunned. For deer my 7mm mag or 30-06 is a minimum for up to 500 yards. For elk, I will use an '06 to 200 yards max. Over that, my 375 WBY is my go to for up to 500 yards. More than that, I would want a big 50.
