west central Iowa | Around here the only local choice is Bomgaars or local lumber yard. Take a look at posts and try to get some with closer growth rings. If rings are 3/8” or more apart, I usually pass. See if you can find posts that were dried a little before they were treated. If soak was shallow, they won’t last. We have set posts that center rotted out and ran out the bottom. Leaving only a 1/2” rind to hold a staple.
If you can find some older wood posts at a farm sale, they may be better than what you can buy new. Posts are pushing in pretty good now. We pushed a pickup load of wood posts with excavator, last Friday. | |
