Interesting, because I replaced heated Ritchies with Cobetts--and one was only 3 years old (but underground pipe problems required moving the waterer site). Yes, we have to break ice on top, but typically on around 15 days each winter. Farther north where you are it would be more often. But we break ice once in the morning and cattle keep it open all day. For me it's a good thing; it means we have to see the cows every day when its cold rather than skipping seeing them a day or two...sort of "an enforced management practice".

Beyond ice, our Cobetts have absolutely been trouble free. The oldest one has been in ~15 years.
