Pittsburg, Kansas | As I understand it as a very non medical person, The cancer grows anerobic. Without oxygen. The opposite of what normal cells do to survive and thrive.
This is also why there has been some good research showing hyperbaric oxygen helping in cancer treatment (oxygen breathed under pressure somewhere below the threshold where it becomes toxic) -
I am somehwat familiar with oxygen toxicity because as a scuba diver that uses enriched air (NITROX) enriched with oxygen I have to be careful not to go to a depth beyond what is safe to avoid dying from oxygen toxicity. 32% NITROX is safe at 1.4x oxygen to 111 feet depth - somewhere before 2x oxygen you are dead or in other words pure oxygen at sea level plus one atmosphere of pressure or in other words 33' deep. That is why divers use air, not oxygen in their dive tanks (because oxygen becomes toxic at too high levels). Navy seals can use rebreathers (so no dive bubbles for detection) and pure oxygen but are limited to a depth less than 33'. Quite a lot of research has been done on oxygen toxicity. Various blends of enriched air with oxygen can be used for certain technical dive situations or for decompression portion of a decompression dive. But my thoughts are meandering beyond the topic at hand............
Bottom line cancer cells do not do well in an oxygen environment. So anything done to increase it slows the growth. Or so the experts say. Dom DeAgustino (sp) has done a lot on the oxygen toxicity study in both diving (for the military) and more lately on cancer.
