NE Indiana-Fort Wayne and NE China | Unfortunately frozen waterlines is not an indicator of the impact of cold temps on soil density reduction. Soil which does not contain free water does not change in volume with freezing temps. Typically by the time the compacted zone, typically a plowpan, does not take in enough water by the time freezing temps occur at that depth at cause any soil density reduction/disruption. By spring time most plowpans in regions with temps low enough to do the job are then wet enough that ripping to fracture that compaction only smears the zone. Our experience is that if we avoid tillage practices which limit root system depth they will successfully attack the deep compaction and over time eliminate the problem. Similarly or maybe contrastingly, the lack of tillage also limits the extent to which rooting depth is achievable. Sounds like no escape doesn't it?
