West Central Iowa | On some of the small frame (4230,4430,4040,4240) quad range tractors the speed can be increased by approximately 28% by changing the 2 speed to a direct/overdrive from the factory underdrive/direct drive. With this changeover, the low side gears will be like the hi side and the hi side will be 28% faster. The 4440, 4450 & 4455QR tractor have this direct/overdrive from the factory, but the reduction ratio at the final drives was increased so the speeds remained the same. This was done to increase the life of the transmission and R&P by decreasing the max torque it would see.
Edit to add: on the 4440,4450,4455 tractors the speed can be increase by putting final drive assembles from an earlier or smaller tractor that used a underdrive/direct drive 2 speed like a 4430. But you are going to loose a lot of final drive durability, which may or may not be a problem, depending on how you use the tractor.
