Did you do a soil assay to find total P ppm? Have you done an analysis on your irrigation water? I think you are most likely correct on the link between your Olsen test level and tie up. Especially given your location in the country.
Always interesting to hear when a particular plant can unleash some bound P. Having real luck with buckwheat here.
Yeah, have the test on our water somewhere. Absolutely loaded with calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate to the point that we have Clemons filters at our pivot points to filter out the scale. Have to flush them several times per week. Water pH of 8.5 and a soil pH of 8.2. Excess lime of 65%+.
Phosphate is just destined to be tied up. Calcium is a kick in the shorts as well. Have all the calcium in the world and tissue samples always come back on the low side.
Anymore info on the buckwheat? What results are you seeing?
What does one do with buckwheat? Just a cover crop? Or forage?
