Chebanse, IL..... | First of all....I am a farmer resident of NE IL, so we call corn removal from the stalk along with the shuck...."picking corn". That term seemed to fit since we used a corn picker for the job. I know that as you move south, it's called "shucking". That's not a NE IL term.
Not fair to be in a 4440 w/a cab, even though back window is open, pulling a picker.
Need to put one of those 560s on the picker for realism! We had one of those NI pickers pulled w/a JD720D.
Just kidding...I know it's all fun. It did apparently pick very clean considering how dry the air has been. We used to get up super-early when the air was dry & try to get as much picking done before the sun got up very far. Once the sun dried the shucks/stalks, it started picking dirty & we'd quit & go to plowing. Otherwise you had a crib full of shucks. Since we also did a lot of the local shelling (M-M Model E sheller), you saw a lot of dirty corn cribbed. Mold, dust, and hard removal next spring/summer when shelling. All part of the necessary fun. Dirty corn in a wire crib was a complete disaster. The word "dynamite" often came up while shelling one of those.
That's "here" experience anyway.
