get rid of that old salt especially the fines in the bottom, they will plug up the brine screen. Make sure the softner is not on bypass. With all the salt out of the brine tank you should have about 8 inches of water in the tank. Put pellet salt in the brine tank usually five or six bags depending on the size of the tank. Don't add any more salt until its all gone, very important. If you keep adding salt before it is empty thefines will plug the screen. Plug in the timer , set the time of day , size of softner, hardness of water .
