We have several. Here using those structures is called a conservation practice named Drainage Water Management.
We follow a water management plan and adjust the boards in the structure to manage water level in field. One of principals is to limit flow in non crop months to allow ground water to denitrify during winter before leaving field.

They claim it reduces nitrate leaving field by 30-40%. We are going to have an automated gate installed this week on one system. I kind of wonder about the longevity of it.

No experience with the possible sedimentation issues since we have only had them a few years. Sand subsoil mostly here.
