Sure thing. However the land should be taxed accordingly. It is no longer being used as farmland so it should not be taxed as farmland. If the solar companies are paying crazy prices for land rent, which land value/use is what figures tax rates, the taxes should then be adjusted accordingly. Unfortunately in some communities, depending on tax laws, these are an even bigger drain on the local economy. Not only is the farmer not supporting the local farm community with inputs, they're not paying taxes on the land because it is now considered a public utility and as such, not taxed. Kind of like having your cake and eating it too. Can a gravel pit owner claim to be a rock farmer and be taxed as such? How are rocks different than the sun? Putting solar panels on prime farmland makes them a sellout, not a farmer. Put solar panels on junk ground. Our state owns a lot of land that is esentially crp and I don't see them doing it.
