Let's pretend the trailer's dot bumper could prevent underrides at 40 mph. Truck was stopped so it would be the equivalent of hitting a wall at 40 mph. Would the results be any different? I would think there still would be 2 deaths.
I would hope Wabash appeals this with some help from the trucking industry.

Hitting a wall at 40mph is a lot different than hitting a trailer's rear cross member/frame rails with a windshield.
Many States and Provinces do not inspect the rear bumper as part of a safety inspection. Many bumpers are C channel and the sides break off easily in colisions, newer bumpers are 7" box.
The bumper on the rear of trailers is still sometimes called a Mansfield bar. It took blood to get those bumpers there in the first place. Would it be so bad or expensive if the bumpers were box instead of channel in the future? |
