Subject: RE: Keep Feeding or Sell

Driftless SW Wisconsin

SteveHail25 - 9/8/2024 20:16 I’ve got 10 Holstein Angus Cross, mix of steers and heifers, all healthy and doing well. Originally, the plan was to sell freezer beef, I sold some from another group, but turned out to be too much of a headache and not the direction I want to go anymore. They are 1,100-1,200 lbs, I bought them at 370 lbs and have been on corn and pellets since then. Are doing really well but I am debating to keep feeding or sell now. I’ve got some other business/personal things going on so it’s not a great time for the risk of keeping & feeding, despite really wanting to. But am looking for advice. My main concern is a crashing market and holding on to them and continuing to spend money on feed when who knows if I’ll ever get it out of them. Appreciate any advice! Keep feeding or sell?

Looking at prices at Bloomington Livestock here in WI last week it appears that Holstein/Angus Cross would sell now at about $1.75-1.80 either as heavy feeders or 1400 lb fats.

What is your cost of gain and is is it worth the risk of prices going down? You may end up feeding them for a few months for no additional profit. Those last pounds can take more feed/lb.

Given the other things going on in your life maybe now is the time to simplify and sell them. jmho. Best of luck to you.

Freezer beef is a lot of work. I'm going to limit my sales to my existing customers and family and sell more bred heifers and cows as breeding stock. I'm also glad to see good Herefords recently bringing comparable prices to blacks as feeders.
