Subject: RE: School shootings

Madison Co. Virginia
I would love to see a de-consolidated school model, particularly for the elementary grades. With modern tech, it should be easier than ever for a teacher to handle multiple grades without individuals falling behind. I'm not saying that that de-consolidated model would be far better, but someone should try it as a proof-of-concept at least.

I grew up in a church-operated school with three to four classrooms, and a total of thirty to fifty students. Bullying did happen, so even a small school isn't immune to such. The biggest advantage that our school had however, was very good teacher/parent relationships. If something went wrong at school, the news of my misdeeds reached my parents before I even got home that afternoon. It seems like that close communication model should be easier with a smaller more-local school, but maybe not.

Our Mennonite church moved into the county in 1958, which was exactly the same time the rural schools were all closed and consolidated. As such, those first Mennonite families made a high priority to start their own school from day one. I've wondered if they wouldn't have been quite as quick to start their own school if the rural schools were still going strong.
