Subject: RE: Local farm fatalities today

Faunsdale, AL
We sent a crew of 4 or 5 guys to level and pack the corn silage in a partially full silo one morning after being rained out the day before. Blower was sitting there, but they did not start it. The first man up the chute opened the door above the level of the silage and he said he could see a layer of gas over the silage. He climbed on in and called for the next guy to come on up. By the time the second and third guys came up the ones already in the silo were experiencing burning of their skin in “sensitive areas” so they finally decided to get out of there.

This crew included some very experienced silage hands as well as some younger ones and none of them did the right thing. I’m so very thankful and consider it a miracle there wasn’t any injury to anyone that day. I guess the lesson is if you don’t specifically train your employees and family members and discuss these dangers, you’re still liable to have disasters. Goal oriented, highly motivated people are sometimes the ones that are most susceptible to this sort of injuries.
