Subject: Started planting our 2025 crops

Latimer, Iowa (north central)
Beautiful weather and the Cyclones beat the Hawkeyes so pretty good couple days. I started planted our 2025 crops yesterday after we finished spreading the field with manure. This is hybrid rye for seed production. I have never grown hybrid rye so experimenting with just 160 acres for next year.

Field is following oats that were harvested on July 18th. Spread 3000 gallons per acre liquid cattle manure on Aug 15th. Rough math of 50 units N per 1000 at 65% available so about 100 units N. Also spread 2 ton of composted feedlot manure on Aug 20th. Roughly 25 N per ton at 65% available so another 30 units. Total of available N of 130. I personally think a little more may be available but figure can topdress with urea next spring if it needs it.

Sprayed with liberty Aug 28th to kill weeds and volunteer oats.

Played it yesterday at 35lbs per acre. Field is on west side of I-35 at milepost 167 if anyone wants to look for it.

We are also mixing cover crop seed. Aerially applied Oats, radish, and turnips on top of soybeans on fields going to oats next year. Aerially applied wheat, oats, radish, and turnip on fields going to corn. Currently mixing cereal rye, oats, radishes, and turnips for seeding with the air seeder after corn harvest on stuff going to soybeans.

Mix for stuff going to beans is 35 lbs cereal rye, 6 lbs oats, 2 lbs turnip, 2 lbs radish. I try and keep my seed cost low and simple as weather is the biggest factor in if covers will be successful or not. A little diversity accounts for some different conditions but people can get carried away and have too much cost per acre in seed.

Our seed cost is
Cereal rye 35 lbs x .19 per pound=6.65
Oats 6 lbs at .13 per pound= 0.78
Radish 2 lbs at 1.28 per pound=2.56
Turnips 2 lbs at 1.35 per pound= 2.70

Seed cost of $12.69 per acre.

We have been getting good stands in the spring of rye and have eliminated pre emerge chems on soybeans with these seed rates. I have been able to lower my cost per acre of producing soybeans by $50 by using cover crops and no-till while keeping yields the same.

Just a bit of some of the yearly experiments. Any thoughts and questions are awesome.

Go State!!!
