Central Indiana
Quite a bit on the table. While some dry matter has already accumulated, you have 3/4 more to go. Usually a hot dry finish like we are having contributes to rapid milk line reduction. The difference between 75,000 kernel/bu with a nice finish and 95,000 kernel/bu is around 15% difference in kernel counts. Now whether that attributes to 15% less yield is uncertain because you have other factors such as test weight and kernel density that can sway those percentages either way. Generally speaking though, corn that droops its shank before black layer is giving up substantial weight in dry matter accumulation because of an accelerated dry down. That’s why it’s a big deal to keep the ear upright and the top half of the plant green to continue feeding the ear with starches as the milk line dissipates. Unfortunately that’s going to shrink a lot of bushels from this crop all over and that’s what USDA and StoneX and others are not factoring in their yields. Going by trend line yields with crop conditions to generate a yield number is ridiculous at best. This crop could go down to 175 average very quickly
