| Our seed treatment costs run from $9 to $34 per unit, depending on the treatment (we have 4 options in addition to untreated seed). We specifically pulled the costs out of the overall price for transparency. If the seed treatment price is doubling the cost of a hybrid, you're being overcharged for it. Or it's a super fancy treatment.
I will agree that planting untreated corn can get you into trouble. However, if you work with a company that does the right germination testing, seed handling, and has strict quality standards, you absolutely can plant untreated seed. The problem is the majority of corn inbred and hybrid development these days is all done with seed treatment (I'm meaning at a minimum, seed fungicides). Those hybrids need it. More independent breeders don't always use seed treatment, and that selects in a good way for seed quality. There are absolutely hybrids I would caution against planting without seed treatment, and there are other hybrids that I would tell you to use seed treatment only if it makes you feel better because you wouldn't need it. A huge part of it is also farm management and when you plan on planting. Early and cold? Yes. Later in the season when the soil is warm, not needed as much. | |
