Absolutely the genetics have something to do with the way the two fields look. The genetics on the right have been bred for drought tolerance and because of how we do that, to be nutrient-efficient. Through the breeding methods, they've also been bred to have more beneficial relationships with the soil biology. All of that affects how a corn plant grows.

Don't know what the nitrogen rate was on the right, and it doesn't matter. This wasn't a research plot. It's two neighboring fields: one intentionally trying to stress the corn and looking better, and the other one trying to maximize yield with fully-trained national brand corn and N rates to maximize yield (because that's how they farm). I don't know about you, but when two farms right next to each other look that different, it gets my attention.
