Tesla prices are starting to get more tempting, particularly as my main vehicle is starting to age. A common rebuttle is, what would I do if we have a long term power outage? Happens every few years or so. I also recently installed a set of solar panels with state grant money. My thought is, is it possible to get something that I can plug the panels into some converter unit and charge a Tesla? As it is right now, if the power goes out, it also cuts the panels, and they can't power the farm.
Are you grid tied with your panels? If so- the question has to be posed to your utility first.
On our solar array, I was looking to do the same thing as you're suggesting. Throw a switch and hopefully have panel generated electricity until the power was restored. Thats a no go with the utility, however. According to my agreement, doing what I wanted to do opened me up to all kinds of stuff that needed to be repaid to them. More than what a back up generator cost at the time.
I realize that common sense here would allow me to utilize the panels in an outage. Thats not a factor in their decision I guess. |
