Probably never. With sexed semen dairies breed enough to keep their replacement numbers what they need. Most of the large dairies around here use sexed female semen to get their replacement number and use sexed angus male on everything else. Most of them have added a small feedyard to finish the beef cross calves. One has even put in his own feed mill with a flaker.
I know smaller dairies that haven’t historically raised their young stock are struggling to find replacements here in MI. It may be that the large dairies with their own replacement heifer programs really won’t feel that squeeze. There is a dairy in MI that has a feedlot in Kansas that he raises most if not all his replacements at. |
