Scranton | Had one full season number end up with really bad pollination, mostly towards the butt of the ears. Like 30 percent of the kernels on many, many cobs didn't pollinate. Plenty of moisture, but not too much. Not horrible heat.
I did have root worm beetles chewing on silks. I was down there(60 miles from home farms) at the beginning of pollination and silks were long and blonde then, but now they are chewed off very short now (in milk stage now). I have little doubt this was my problem but with a lot of organic corn annually, I'm no stranger to this problem and I've never had a pollination problem in my life, even in much dryer circumstances.
I was wondering if this was partially a specific hybrid problem, or if certain hybrids are more prone. This is a new number to me this year. Nothing I can do now, but sure wish I would have done insecticide at R1. | |
