Malta, Illinois | That particular hybrid is new to us so don't have any history on kernel depth, ear weight, grain quality, etc.. It is planted in a field with another hybrid that is getting pretty long in the tooth that has a history of huge kernels, decent ear weight and grain quality. We drop everything at 34,000 to 36,500 depending on hybrid and soil type. This hybrid was dropped at 35,000. The ears are all very nice but a little inconsistent. Ear and kernel counts give some pretty big numbers but it will all come down to weight at the end. As I said, I think we currently have enough moisture in the ground to finish this crop pretty well. We just had some nice rains last week. Will another shot of rain in two weeks add some weight to those ears? It might but not sure. | |
