Subject: RE: Seed Corn Quality

northeastern Ohio
Way back in 2004, I looked at the Ohio State corn trials and graphed out the emergence vs. yield. Emergence ranged from 81% to 99%. On average, you gain 2 bushel for every 1% increase in emergence. Going from 80% emergence to 100% could gain 40 bushel on the same hybrid! Quality matters.

Almost every seed company runs a cold germ test on each seed lot. Unfortunately, they are only required to put the warm germ on the seed tag. Some small companies will show the cold results but most companies won't.

I would like to run a cold germ test on every lot that I buy. Order an extra pallet and return the one that has the lowest cold germ. If we all did that, there would probably be a seed shortage! And lately I haven't received my seed until days before planting. Doesn't leave enough time to do a cold germ test.

I think the better solution would be to change the seed tag law. Cold germ should be on every tag. Good job for Farm Bureau????

Alternative solution would be to put in our seed purchase agreement that we will not accept seed below XX% cold germ.

Or that money will be refunded for every percent below XX% cold germ. Example: Order states that it must be above 85% cold germ. Test reveals that it is 80%. We plant it, but seed company should refund 10 bushel per acre (2 bushel multiplied by the points below 85%). One bag of corn does 2.6 acres. Corn at $4 would give a $104 refund per bag!!!!!
