I've had this happen when we have a wet spring with early maturities. No deep roots because they don't have to try for moisture. Tons of vegetative growth, load with pods, then heat hits in Oklahoma, and they roast. end up making very flat beans, or tons of unfilled pods.. also in the lighter soils just dying. It looks like shallow roots, ran out of moisture to me.
