| the high priced groceries arent going in the farmer`s pocket ie 8¢ of corn in a $5.50 box of corn flakes. the price of beef is up because of the drought in the west and "lowest cow numbers since the 1950s" then you have the big 4 beef packers, that isnt a fair market. the segment of the economy who are doing very very well dont bat an eye at having a $100 steak at the restaurant, meanwhile the bottom 50% are mixing hamburger helper with their ground beef.
high prices in the supermarket are probably sticky because regulations, fuel prices, labor costs and availability, building costs, money costs, lack of competition. some of those things can be affected politically without rewriting the basics of capitalism and i think that is what the former president is alluding to.
john stossel reported on this so-called "price gouging" once: if there`s a hurricane approaching in florida and evacuation is recommended. gas stations charge $10/gallon, that is okay because you buy 5 gallon of gas to get you out of florida and that is that. however, if the gas station charged their regular $3.30/gallon, the first dozen people would fill their tanks to the brim and a trunk full of containers and the gas station would run out of gas and most people wouldnt get anything. so, a good lot of the high price causes take time to heal, but in this country people are impatiently complaining that cooking minute rice takes too long.
these politicians proposing "price freezes" out of the other side of their mouth say "inflation is dead! hip hip hooray! lets lower interest rates! happy days are here again!" well, which is it "happy days or it`s bad, we need price controls!"?
