IL
4840 is my main tillage tractor and has been on the farm since new in 78. I have a 7060 Allis that is more usable with less horsepower and noticably less torque strictly because of the extra gears to choose from. I don't shift a tractor once it's working dirt, may throttle back a bit on a turn row. 15 speed or quad range is better suited for tillage than the 8 speed.

You can disk an 80 twice in a long day with a 4840 and 24ft disk. You can cover it 3 times in a long day with a 27ft danish tine field cultivator. You can plant it in a morning with a 12 row planter.

When my 4840 was down I ran my 95 PTO hp loader tractor over an 80 acre field. I disked 80 acres with a 18ft disc in an short day. 18ft field cultivator twice the next day. Planed it the third day with a 12 row. I always plant with the smaller tractor because it's lighter and uses a lot less fuel with twice the gears.
