The usability of the 4840 is severely limited by its 8 speed transmission.  

IMO, you need to go a series newer in JD if you need something bigger than a 4640.  


Not round here. In the past, not so distant, they were the most common tractor in the Mississippi alluvial plain. I’ve had two of them and they’ve done dirt scoops, land planes, 28’ disks, FC’s, 5 shank v-rippers, chisel plows, hippers, plants up to 12 row 30” 3 point, spraying and auger wagon. Now, I won’t argue there’s a significant gap in between the 2 main working gears, or the 15 speed was better but turning the the pump up from 180hp to 210hp, helps. The 4840 virtually had no competition in sales from my area south. There were more 4440’s than 4640’s and I’d take a 4640 PS over a 4630 all day, any day.
