Many GM options, and all of their engines, have been denoted by those three-digit codes. For example, the 6.6L gas v8 discussed in this thread is designated as a 'L8T'. The classic 6.0 gas v8 used in the mid-2000's 2500 pickups was the 'LQ4'.The last gen1 small-block used in pickups, the one with 'spider-injection' in the late 1990's, was the 'L31'. Note that most(all?) of GM's engine codes start with 'L'.

There's similar codes for rear locking differentials(G80), 4.10 gears(GT5), 3.73 gears(GT4), and almost anything else you can imagine. These codes are written on the sticker that's pasted to the inside of the glovebox door on GM trucks from the 1980's and newer. In earlier models, they often put the sticker on the inner fender under the hood.
