Highland Center, in Southeast Iowa

clevepreach - 7/26/2024 07:33 Rumor has it that Captain Kangaroo served honorably also. Sadly, some of those guys came to tragic ends. It is my understanding that Audie Murphy had a serious drinking problem which eventually led to his demise. Ira Hays (not an actor but one of the guys who planted the flag on Iwo Jima) also died of alcoholism. Lots of improvements have been made since WWII but we need to take care of the wounded and widows of those who gave “the last full measure of devotion” in the service of this country.

Audie Murphy's death as a passenger in a private plane that struck a mountain doesn't appear to be a result of a "serious drinking problem".

I'm sorry. That was snotty and uncalled for. Audie Murphy had a dependence on some of the drugs he was given following his military service, but recognized the issue and locked himself away in a room alone until his body cleared the drugs. I'm unaware of an alcohol dependence, but can't unequivocally say that.
