Years ago in the spring dogs got into Dad's beef herd and they all got out. All but one followed a bucket of feed home after they had settled down. The one stayed out and was not seen again until late summer. An old livestock dealer had coon hounds and a bull dog. The hounds chased the steer out into the open and tired him out. The bull dog clamped onto his neck and immobilized him. A rope was placed around the steers neck and he was led into a trailer and the bull dog was removed. The old man is long gone and that service is no longer available. I have used a 4 wheeler to run a 400# animal down and tire him out enough to get a rope around his neck and drag him home with the 4 wheeler. We do have pleasure horses and use them to round up the herd from the summer pasture to haul them home to the feed lot for the winter. 4 wheelers would be faster and more efficient but the horses are more fun. I'm not going to try to rope anything that big from horse back.
